SAIS Rethinking Iran Launches "Feminist Futures" Project

Pioneering Exploration of Global Feminist Movements

WASHINGTON D.C., MAY 26, 2023 - Rethinking Iran at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is pleased to announce the launch of its newest project, Feminist Futures. This new multimedia platform builds upon the “women, life, freedom” uprisings in Iran, and takes stock of the continued rise in social movements around the world that are led by women and queer people.

This platform foregrounds the call of feminist writers and organizers to contemplate how we create, strategize, and build movements for a more habitable world for all. It provides a roadmap to how we got here, where we find ourselves now, and where we can steer to as we imagine new futures together.

Feminist Futures launches with an exclusive interview of Professor Barbara Ransby and a compelling essay by Professor Arzoo Osanloo. Dr. Ransby discusses what we can learn from feminist organizers, past and present, about the urgency to create movements based in radical democratic leadership. Meanwhile, Dr. Osanloo's essay explores the revolutionary essence of the Iranian women's rights movement, spotlighting women’s adept use of civil law, as well as the problematic shift toward a discourse of benevolence within global contexts. Together, these perspectives shed light on the transformative power of women's activism and its implications for broader social change.

Feminist Futures serves as a vibrant platform that unites brilliant minds from across the globe, featuring leading feminist thinkers, writers, artists, and activists who spearhead the exploration of radical feminist politics with a special emphasis on the Global South. Through a series of thought-provoking essays, captivating interviews, and compelling multimedia content, Feminist Futures will release new material on a regular basis. The collection showcases bilingual critical reflections, stimulating provocations, and a diverse range of artistic expressions, all shedding light on the vibrant tapestry of global feminist movements. The platform features a visually engaging mural that constantly evolves, incorporating imagery and slogans drawn from past and present feminist uprisings worldwide. Seeking to foster meaningful deliberations on the intersections of global feminist liberation movements, Feminist Futures redefines the very notion of revolution by embracing the invitation of our present moment.
